Finding Peace in Times of Fear and Sadness

Yesterday, our world felt heavier. Tragedies struck—near and far—and today we also remember the heartbreaking losses of September 11 attacks.

Many of us are carrying sadness, fear, confusion, or even numbness. When the world feels unsafe and uncertain, our nervous systems go into high alert, making it hard to think clearly, rest, or feel grounded.

This is a gentle reminder: you are human, and your nervous system is designed to protect you. When you experience fear, grief, or trauma—even indirectly—your body responds as if danger is near.

That’s not weakness.

That’s biology.

And there are ways to care for yourself and reconnect to peace, hope, and God, even when the world feels dark.

Understanding Your Nervous System

Your nervous system has two main modes:

  • Fight/Flight (Sympathetic): Your heart races, muscles tense, thoughts speed up.

  • Rest/Digest (Parasympathetic): Your breath slows, body softens, and you feel safe.

In moments of tragedy, our systems often get stuck in fight/flight. The key is to gently guide your body back into safety—so your mind and spirit can follow.

5 Simple Ways to Regulate Your Nervous System Today

Here are gentle tools to bring your body back into balance. They don’t take long, but they can shift everything.

1. Breathe Slowly and Deeply

  • Place one hand on your heart and one on your belly.

  • Inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 6–8 counts.

  • Repeat for 2–5 minutes.

This signals safety to your brain, lowering stress hormones and slowing your heart rate.

2. Ground Through Your Senses

  • Notice 5 things you can see, 4 you can touch, 3 you can hear, 2 you can smell, and 1 you can taste.

  • This pulls your awareness into the present moment and out of the racing thoughts.

3. Move Your Body Gently

  • Go for a slow walk, stretch, or sway to calming music.

  • Movement releases tension and brings your body back into regulation.

4. Limit the Noise

  • Step away from social media and news, even for just an hour.

  • Constant exposure can keep your nervous system stuck in fear mode.

5. Pray or Meditate

  • Talk honestly with God. Tell Him your fear, sadness, anger, or confusion.

  • Ask for His peace to cover you.

  • Sit in silence and listen. Even a few minutes can bring profound comfort.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalms 34:18

Remember: You’re Not Alone

Grief and fear can make us feel isolated, but we are deeply connected. Reach out to a friend, a counselor, a pastor, or someone you trust. Sharing the weight lightens it.

And if you are a parent, teacher, or coach—remember our kids are watching how we navigate this.

They don’t need us to be perfect; they just need to see that it’s okay to have big feelings and to find ways to come back to calm and hope.

A Gentle Invitation

Today, pause.

Place your hand on your heart.

Breathe.

Whisper a prayer.

Let yourself cry if you need to.

Let yourself rest.

Let yourself hope.

Even in dark moments, light still exists. Love still exists. God is still near.

You are safe.

You are loved.

You are not alone.

A Prayer for Peace and Comfort

God,
In the midst of fear, sadness, and uncertainty,

we come to You seeking peace.

Wrap Your loving arms around the hurting,

and quiet the storms within our hearts.

Remind us that even in darkness,

Your light still shines.

Help us breathe deeply,

feel Your presence,

and remember that we are never alone.

Bring comfort to those who mourn,

safety to those who are afraid,

and hope to every weary soul.

Anchor us in Your love today and always.

Amen.

Please use this as my gift to you!

When our minds are racing with fear or grief, our bodies often carry that burden in ways we don’t immediately notice — tight shoulders, shallow breathing, a restless heart. This video will guide you gently into reconnecting with the wisdom of your body: learning to listen, to soften, and to find peace that flows from within. As you watch, invite God to meet you in your body, to soothe what is raw and restore what is weary.

For the Breathwork Video (https://youtu.be/xMlf-EXMpds)

Breath is one of the most powerful tools we have — a simple, ever-present invitation to return to calm. In this breathwork practice you’ll be led to slow your inhale, soften your exhale, and anchor into the rhythm of your breath. Let each breath be a prayer: a moment to rest, to release fear, to trust in the promise of God’s presence.
